DECODE Digital Design Sensations @ V&A
The V&A have been putting on the most amazing exhibitions. I absolutely loved the recent Telling Tales exhibition and now they've completely blown me away with their current exhibition - DECODE Digital Design Sensations. After 6 years of educational training in textiles design and a further 4 years teaching, I have developed a little obsession with digital media. My specialist areas are Adobe Photoshop and illustrator, but recently I did try to self teach myself a little bit of Flash. I love the idea of pushing the idea of surface decoration further into something that interacts and engages more with the viewer, and this exhibition completely feeds my hunger for these contemporary ideas.
There was so much amazing work that it has taken me quite some time to compile the collected images. And even longer to edit out all the audio of me gasping and wittering on about how incredible it all is to my work colleague in the background of the video footage. I really haven't done it justice or documented the complete collection. IT IS AN EXHIBITION THAT REALLY MUST BE SEEN, and I am definitely going to revisit it.
The work that really took my breath away were...
This amazing piece was created by Sennep and Yoke, it allows the participant to blow away the the seeds on the digital image of the dandelion clock with a hairdryer. I find it so very exciting to see both technical wizardry and gorgeous aesthetics combined and complimenting each other gracefully to create a gorgeous finished product.

This piece by Flight 404 was amazing, it the movement of the graphics responded to sound, the picture above the video shows how the graphics appears when it detects no sound.
This piece by Mehmet Atken was absolutely breath taking, it enabled the viewer to create splashes/explosions of colour on the canvas by interacting with the screen.
A brilliant piece by Random International the viewer stands infront of the frame whilst it scans in a temporary image of their face onto the white screen.

Pecha Kucha, London #1 @ Big Chill House
"PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace." www.pecha-kucha.org
I recently attended the Pecha Kuchan night in London. A brilliant evening with presentations from a variety of exciting and inspiring speakers.
Highlights of the evening were...
"Waldemeyer transforms the flamboyent Prince of Power Pop into an ultra-kitsch neon Statue of Liberty with his new era of laser bling." (www.waldemeyer.com/MIKA.html)
Moritz Waldemeyer did a fantastic talk about his work and collaborations in music, fashion and furniture. I particularly loved his coffee table that turned into a clubbing laser dance cage, unfortunately I haven't been able to find pictures on the internet to put on my blog. And his commission for the Mika 'We are Golden' music video in which Mika requested to have lasers coming from his crotch, sheer genius!!!

Design Against Crime gave a really interesting talk about how they try to find methods of tackling crime such as shoplifting, by roleplaying the actions of shoplifters. I particularly loved the comical concept of the pizza box laptop case by Human Beans, let's just hope you don't come across a burglar who's a little partial to pizza!
Alpha Tomamu Towers by Klein Dytham architecture
Mark Dytham the co-founder of Pecha Kucha has an impressive portfolio of architecture. I admire that not only does he design some spectacular buildings, but the ability of being able to integrate pattern successfully onto the buildings veneers in a way that compliments its surroundings. I was particularly drawn to the Alpha Tomamu Towers in Japan, two buildings, one decorated in tones of grey and the other in tones of green pixelated camouflage. A brilliant concept which means that in summer the green building is camouflaged in it's surroundings, and in the winter the grey building appears to be hidden.

Contemporary Prints @ Alan Christea Gallery
I found myself popping into Contemporary Prints, a group exhibition at the Alan Christea Gallery and was impressed by the new Julian Opie work. I think it's great that he's developing a new body of work, and the use of 3D lenticulars gives a fascinatingly new take on the familiar Japanese imagery/illustrations. Unfortunately it's not possible to see the 3D effect with the images I've added to my blog, but I have added the images to provide a general idea of the imagery itself.
Michael Craig-Martin also stood out in this group exhibition. Although I am probably a tad biased as I have for a number of years admired his work.
This animation was not in the show, but provides a general idea the of the movement that the 3D effect created.

Korean Eye @ the Saatchi
KOREAN EYE AT PHILLIPS DE PURY & CO GALLERY AT THE SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON
At the top of the Saatchi Gallery they're exhibiting some exciting contemporary Korean Art. I particularly love this contemporary screen by Lee Lee Nam, who mixes digital technology with traditional imagery.

Seeper PufferSphere @ Tent Digital
I came across Seeper at Tent Digital. London Design Festival. They were exhibiting the PufferSphere, which appeared to be a much bigger and far more sophisticated version of the 80's plasma ball. A large scale multi touch, multi user system on a spherical display... absolutely amazing!
