A Tapestry of Dalston

Being a bit of an old skool raver in my youth I do go a little weak at the knees at a bit of UV!

Realms of Glam by Audrey Roger

New Weaving Plus Divine Shanghai by Colin Henderson

Dalstanimals by Jake Blanchard

Jazzy Animals by Marcus Oakley

Bringing together a cross-section of handpicked, Dalston-based creatives, we briefed each to conceive & produce a pattern-based piece, taking inspiration from the many historical & cultural influences that the area encompasses.
The artists were asked to consider the patterns & textures that surround them daily ‘from the mundane to the magnificent’& use them to develop original one-off works.
Displayed together these pieces represent a tapestry of the area – from day into night – by its resident creatives.
“Our aim with A TAPESTRY OF DALSTON is to showcase, through the medium of pattern, the creative talent that abounds in Hackney, giving those individuals the cultural melting pot of their home neighbourhood as inspiration. As with all our work at Patternity, we encourage people to seek out, appreciate & enjoy pattern everywhere – then use this to bring about something original & exciting” Anna Murray // Patternity
ULTRA VIOLET
The basement & street level lighting up & down the Kingsland Road was also a significant source of inspiration for the lighting of the exhibition for the private view. From dawn to dusk, the illumination & pattern of activity changes by the hour, as with the gallery. Seasonal variations play their part: sunshine or cloud gives way to UV lighting as the day fades.
Each work is set in its own time-frame. The pieces produced take on a new presence under the lighting so synonymous with the area. The end result; a tapestry of pattern & light, inspired by Dalson & created by those who live their lives there.

EXPOSED: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera @ Tate Modern

I absolutely loved Oliver Lutz's piece, The Lynching of Leo Frank. The viewer is presented with a black canvas printed with specialist inks, facing the canvas is a camera and monitor that exposes the true contents of the canvas and allows the viewer to interact with the artwork.

Helen Levitt

Sophie Calle
In order to execute her project The Hotel (1981), she was hired as a chambermaid at a hotel in Venice where she was able to explore the writings and objects of the hotel guests. Insight into her process and its resulting aesthetic can be gained through her account of this project: "I spent one year to find the hotel, I spent three months going through the text and writing it, I spent three months going through the photographs, and I spent one day deciding it would be this size and this frame...it's the last thought in the process." wikipedia

Laura Clarke

I recently viewed Laura Clarke's Punctum video piece at RCA show 1 (view video), which for me was the highlight of the whole graduate show.

Pecha Kucha, London #1 @ Big Chill House

"PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.  It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace." www.pecha-kucha.org

I recently attended the Pecha Kuchan night in London.  A brilliant evening with presentations from a variety of exciting and inspiring speakers.

Highlights of the evening were...

"Waldemeyer transforms the flamboyent Prince of Power Pop into an ultra-kitsch neon Statue of Liberty with his new era of laser bling." (www.waldemeyer.com/MIKA.html)
Moritz Waldemeyer did a fantastic talk about his work and collaborations in music, fashion and furniture.  I particularly loved his coffee table that turned into a clubbing laser dance cage, unfortunately I haven't been able to find pictures on the internet to put on my blog.  And his commission for the Mika 'We are Golden' music video in which Mika requested to have lasers coming from his crotch, sheer genius!!!

Some beautiful work by Conjoin:me
"Sian-Kate Mooney and Hedley Roberts have conjoined their creative practice to develop a series of art-fashion pieces that explore the relationship between the image, the textile and the conjoined form."  Conjoin:me facebook group

Design Against Crime  gave a really interesting talk about how they try to find methods of tackling crime such as shoplifting, by roleplaying the actions of shoplifters.  I particularly loved the comical concept of the pizza box laptop case by Human Beans, let's just hope you don't come across a burglar who's a little partial to pizza!

Alpha Tomamu Towers by Klein Dytham architecture
Mark Dytham the co-founder of Pecha Kucha has an impressive portfolio of architecture.  I admire that not only does he design some spectacular buildings, but the ability of being able to integrate pattern successfully onto the buildings veneers in a way that compliments its surroundings.  I was particularly drawn to the Alpha Tomamu Towers in Japan, two buildings, one decorated in tones of grey and the other in tones of green pixelated camouflage.  A brilliant concept which means that in summer the green building is camouflaged in it's surroundings, and in the winter the grey building appears to be hidden.

Transient Praxis @ UEL

Some exciting work exhibited by the University of East London staff; Helen Carter, Caryl Court, Joe Hunter (Vexed Generation)Sian-Kate Mooney (conjoin:me), Mika Nash, Lesley Robertson, and Lucy Jones. The exhibition was also followed with a Symposium which was chaired by Jane Harris and also included the Guest Speaker Tom Klinkowstein.

Lesley Robertson

Sian-Kate Mooney

Mika Nash

The guest speaker, Tom Klinkowstein delivered an great presentation which included the Big Dog robot video, it was amazing to see how the audience reacted to the footage in which they expressed a range of emotions from empathy to disgust and amazement, all of which encouraging a great amount of debate, and made me reflect on the rapid development of technology that I've encountered in the last three decades of my existence.

I like the the word Naughty by Alison Wood @ SH!

Last night I popped down to Alison Wood's private view at the very appropriate venue, SH! a sex shop tucked away in the back of Hoxton Square.  I love her prints which are brilliantly illustrated, they're sexual without being seedy and they really do put a smile to my face which is much needed on a very rainy Saturday evening!
